Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is recruiting for a Senior Water Quality Engineer.  This position serves as a technical expert in water quality and treatment engineering on technically complex, highly visible, and high priority water quality and treatment projects for SPU and the City to ensure that water quality meet or exceed drinking water standards to protect public health.  The incumbent provides oversight of the DBO drinking water treatment facilities.  This position reports to the Drinking Water Quality Manager.
 Job Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for drinking water quality planning and engineering functions ensuring that activities are consistent with applicable laws, regulations, requirements and accepted practices
  • Work with DBO contractors at SPU-owned drinking water
    treatment facilities on day-to-day coordination of water quality issues, troubleshoot and resolve water quality treatment challenges
  • Collaborate with SPU staff and purveyors to address
    drinking water quality concerns. Assist in planning and coordinating
    transmission, distribution and storage operations that may impact or be
    influenced by the drinking water treatment facilities
  • Provide CIP project support as needed on aspects related to
    water quality. Communicate water quality processes, events, and policies as needed to internal stakeholders, elected officials, news media and the general public
  • Plan for drinking water quality emergency response; provide water quality engineering support and consultation to internal SPU staff
  • Track water quality data
  • Prepare and submit annual drinking water regulatory reports.
 Qualifications:
Experience:  Five (5) years of engineering project management, drinking water treatment, and water quality management or related experience

Education:  Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering or related field OR two (2) additional years of qualifying experience.

License:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington (or the ability to obtain through comity within the first six (6) months of employment)
  • Valid driver license
 Additional Information:
  • Experience managing consultant contracts
  • Knowledge of and experience working with large surface water utility treatment facilities including filtration, ozone, and UV systems
  • Excellent working knowledge of state and federal drinking water regulations
  • Experience organizing and leading teams
  • Demonstrated ability to make professional decision/judgment
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audience
  • Possess excellent communications skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
