POSITION DETAILS:
This is skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive, motor, and specialized maintenance equipment including both gas and diesel engines. This position will have an emphasis on heavy duty diesel truck and equipment repair.
PRIMARY DUTIES *Troubleshoots equipment or system failures and assures proper corrective actions
are implemented.
*Diagnoses malfunctions on gas and/or diesel engines, heavy and specialized equipment, pumps, and generators and other equipment; makes repairs by adjusting or replacing parts such as tires, belts, axles, hydraulic cylinders, carburetor, electrical wiring, starters, etc.
*Performs tune-ups, oil changes, and emission control repairs, adjusts brakes, lubricates vehicles, performs electronic tune-ups, etc.
*Observes, compares, and monitors objects and data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
*Performs emissions testing to determine compliance with current standards
*Makes emergency repairs in the field or in the shop on equipment such as back hoes, graders, automobiles, dump trucks, pumps, and generators.
*Prepares new vehicles for operations by installing after market equipment and electronic components, as necessary to meet operational requirements. *Safely uses common hand tools and operates power driven tools and machinery.
*Monitors job safety and observes Federal and State safety regulations and requirements; trains other employees in safety techniques, and the safe use of tools and equipment.
*Compiles and maintains permanent records using both computerized and manual systems.

*Estimates labor and material costs.
*Effectively and courteously communicates orally with customers, coworkers, vendors and the public in one-on-one settings and over the telephone. *Operates a motor vehicle requiring a Commercial Driver's License.
*Works with cleaning fluids, cleaning agents, automotive or similar solutions using normal protective equipment.
*Adapts tools, equipment, and parts to specific repair problems.
*Reads, understands and applies shop manuals, tune-up specifications, and other technical materials.
*Works independently with little or no supervision.
*Shows initiative in performing job functions.
*Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
*Due to internal and external customer service needs, incumbent must be able to work a full time schedule, on-site (appropriate City work sites).
*Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
*Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.
*Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.
*Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.
*Shows initiative in performing job functions *Performs work related tasks as required.
May supervise, direct, review work of and/or schedule work of employees in the same or lower classifications using basic supervisory principles.
May assist in ordering materials for the section as required.
*Safely performs arc and gas welding.
*Performs routine shop maintenance activities.
*Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by automotive repair courses at the vocational school level AND two years related work experience OR a combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
Possesses and retains valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License or must obtain one within twelve months as a condition of employment.
Valid and current ASE certification in the following areas: Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance OR must obtain within twelve months, or whenever the next test is scheduled, whichever is later (and keep current thereafter), as a condition of employment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Works in automotive garage setting. Noise levels are moderate with occasional periods of high noise levels. Performs physical actions in performing the job functions, including maintaining static arm hand positions; making fine, highly controlled muscular movements to manipulate small objects and adjust control mechanisms; lifting arm above shoulder level; bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time; and moving heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less). Occasionally required to stand and reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend or crawl. Mixes and works with chemicals using normal protective equipment. Employee is frequently required to perform work under pressure for deadlines, and is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.
