Urban Forestry Intern
Supervisor: MPT Urban Forester
Session: Summer/Fall 2015
Duration: 120 hours, minimum
Compensation: Volunteer, unless work study qualified
Internship
Intern will learn how to undertake design, study and field implementation of park and open space projects. Most of the work will be geared toward assisting the Metro Parks Tacoma Urban Forester on attaching signs to trees located at Wright Park Arboretum. In addition, the intern will work closely with the Forester on helping develop interruptive signage for Wright Park Arboretum. The intern will also learn about and promote open space and urban forestry conservation practices.
Qualifications
* Strong interest in pursuing a career in urban forestry or other related environmental science.
* Proficiency in (or ability to quickly learn) tree and shrub identification.
* Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
* Read and interpret accurately difficult and complex material; collect, compile and objectively analyze data; write clear and concise reports; potentially including experience using GIS or other tracking systems.
* Must be proficient in Microsoft software applications
* Currently enrolled in an accredited two or four-year college or university with course work in a related field.
* Previous environmental experience is desirable, but is not required.
* Must be at least 19 years of age and pass a state background check.
