Communications Director
Washington State Senate Republican Caucus
Closing Date: August 31, 2015
The Senate Republican Caucus is looking for a strong, energetic and creative communications director who can lead team members to achieve communications goals of the caucus and its individual senators.

POSITION SUMMARY
 Create and execute a media plan framing issues for Majority Coalition & Republican
senators and their constituents.
 Manage message development and press outreach tailored to the unique voice and district
of each senator.
 Explore and implement new communications technologies and strategies.
 Coordinate senators’ radio, video, online and print media presence.
 Manage a staff of up to 8.
 Work with senators and their policy staff to shape and communicate policies.

NECESSARY SKILLS
 Work directly with caucus leadership and chief of staff to engage the public on the
legislative issues of the day.
 Understand the legislative process and have experience working in a political
environment.
 Work under the pressure and time constraints of a legislative session. Be calm in a crisis, with great instincts. Be able to make decisions quickly and deal with conflicting and fast-changing demands on time and skills. Thrive under deadlines with quick turnaround.
 Possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills for both press and constituent
audiences.
 Understanding of radio, online and print media; ability to keep up with new and
developing media technologies.
 Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with WordPress,
Twitter and Facebook.
 Excellent detail-oriented project management.
 Develop and maintain a good working relationship with members of the Capitol press
corps.
 Experience supervising professional staff with ability to create a supportive and positive
work environment.
 Able to frame complex political issues into a coherent and simple message.
 Handy with a sound bite and good marketing sense. Can craft effective messages, slogans
and tactics that clarify policy points.
 Excellent political and strategic judgment.
 Ability to work as a team within senior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
 Degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field.
 Ten years of professional journalism or public relations experience.  Experience working in a political environment.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This full-time position includes vacation, sick leave, paid state holidays, retirement, social security, health, life and other optional insurance. Salary depends upon qualifications and experience.
