Wetland Biological Science Technician - PRE-Announcement
Position duration: 9-12 months with possible extension (funding dependent)
Rate: $18.12/hr

This is a hiring pre-announcement. We are seeking a motivated applicant to support a climate change research project evaluating sea-level rise impacts to tidal wetlands. Applicant should have experience or interest in working in estuarine wetlands in California. Applicants will gain experience in coastal wetland ecology, water quality and climate change research. Duties will include field and lab tasks with minimal supervision. Position involves field work in the wetlands of the San Francisco Bay, Humboldt Bay, and southern California. Some field work may require travel, per diem will be provided. Duties include field work (~50% time), data management (~25%), sample processing (~20%), and assistance with project reports (~5%). Field tasks will include deployment and maintenance of sensors to track water level, salinity, and water temperature; and assisting in manipulative experiments to study variation in tidal marsh plant growth and organic matter decomposition; and collection of field samples to assess spatial patterns of marsh sedimentation. Field work will also include wetland elevation and vegetation surveys.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related fields such as Ecology, Botany or Environmental Science. Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Office software. Applicant should be comfortable on small boats and in heavy, urban traffic conditions. Familiarity or experience with wetlands a plus. Good communication, data collection and management skills are important. Applicant will often work independently with little supervision. Experience with boats a plus.

Technician may be asked to work long hours (including early morning or evening hours and some weekend days) to accomplish fieldwork. Good physical condition, a current driver's license, and a good driving record are required. Applicants must be able to lift 40 lbs.
