Fair Housing Specialist Intern
20 hours/week
$10/hour Extra Hire/No Benefits

NATURE OF WORK:
This is professional work for the Fair Housing Center of Washington (Fair Housing Center). Under the direction of the executive director or designee provide support to intake and investigation of complaints, testing and administrative programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
*Receive and analyze complaints from persons alleging housing discrimination to determine jurisdiction. Assist Investigator/Educator with arranging and conducting investigative interviews, attempting mediation/negotiation between parties, drafting proper complaints and requests for reasonable accommodation, and making referrals to HUD or FHAP agencies.
*Assist Investigator/Educator with investigation of discrimination complaints, interview witnesses, review documents and visit sites as necessary to gather factual information and record searches.
*Input intake and investigation information on internal agency approved data base system.
*Potentially, assist with elements of the testing program as it relates to complaint investigation to include unit availability calls, tester assignments and writing test reports.
*Prepare monthly statistical and narrative reports as appropriate.
*Administrative duties as assigned.
*Perform related duties as assigned by the executive director.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
*Knowledge of state, local, and federal laws pertaining to fair housing.
*Knowledge of methods, techniques, concepts and developments in the field of fair housing, investigation, fair housing testing, human rights and discrimination.
*Knowledge of community resources.
*Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
*Ability to prepare complex reports.
*Ability to read, interpret, apply, explain and report codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
*Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
*Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
*Ability to communicate with persons for whom English is their second language. Ability to work with translators and related translation programs.
*Ability to operate computer systems and a variety of software programs.
*Ability to maintain objectivity and remain calm in a hostile environment.
*Ability to plan and organize work, meet schedules and timelines.
*Ability to operate a variety of office equipment i.e. computer, calculator, tape recorder and video equipment.

RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS:
An equivalent combination of: graduation from a four year college or university and two years of experience in complaint investigation, training programs and program administration or any combination of training and experience which clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the job.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
Valid Washington State driver’s license
Special Note: Position requires activity in both office and field environments. Fair Housing Specialist may be subject to potential verbal and physical abuse.
