The Attorney General's Office (AGO) serves more than 230 state agencies, boards, commissions, colleges and universities, as well as the Legislature and the Governor. The mission of the Office is to deliver the highest quality professional legal services to officials, agencies, and citizens of the state of Washington. The Office is comprised of over 500 attorneys and 700 professional staff.
The Bellingham office represents:
Department of Social and Health Services in juvenile litigation in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan counties, as well as licensing of facilities such as for Foster Care providers.
Department of Early Learning in child care licensing matters.
The Department of Labor and Industries in Workers Compensation matters.
The Department of Employment Security in unemployment compensation appeals.
The Department of Licensing in driver’s license revocation and suspension matters.
Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College, Bellingham Technical College, Skagit Valley College, and Educational Service District 189.
Legal Services Provided:
The office provides representation to its clients through both litigation and client advice. Litigation includes hearings and trials in juvenile court and superior court, administrative hearings under the Administrative Procedures Act, and in federal court. Client advice is provided to clients on a broad range of subjects, particularly in the representation of education clients. Attorneys are also responsible for handling cases appealed to the Court of Appeals and Washington Supreme Court.
This office's Consumer Resource Center (CRC) combined with the other Regional CRCs, handle an average of 55,000 calls, greet nearly 1,500 walk-in consumers and process 25,000 written consumer complaints. As a result of the informal mediation of the 25,000 written consumer complaints, the CRCs help return more than $6 million to the consumers of the state each year.
The Opportunity
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Secretary 2 in our Regional Services Division. This position is located in Bellingham. Please note there is the possibility of an in-training from the Legal Secretary 1 level.
Salary
The salary listed above is for the Legal Secretary 2 level. Applicants qualifying at the Legal Secretary 1 level will start at a salary range 38 ($30,504 - $39,516 annually) and after successful completion of the in-training will move to the Legal Secretary 2 range.
DUTIES:
This position provides specialized legal secretarial support requiring a high degree of knowledge of legal concepts and issues. The incumbent will support up to nine Assistant Attorneys General. In addition, the incumbent shall perform entry level paralegal support at

least 25% to 40% of the time.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
· Drafts and types various pleadings for hearing or trial per attorney direction;
· Ensures the proper and timely filing and serving of legal pleadings in the appropriate courts and on the various parties, including
service of parents via legal publication;
· Assist AAG in preparation of trial notebooks;
· Schedule witnesses for trial;
· Draft correspondence and memoranda;
· Schedules telephone conferences, depositions, court hearings/trials and meetings;
· Arranges for court reporters and confirms court reporters and hearings; · Work closely with AAG for filing documents with the Court of Appeals;
· Assist AAG in the typing and preparing of court of appeals briefs by using the AGO TOC/TOA formatting, which shall also include checking citations and ensuring that the documents are in the proper format per the court rules;
· Organize and maintain litigation files and track case status;
· Open case files using office procedure and case management system rules;
· Enter into the Case Management System/Law Manager all court/calendar dates; tickle dates and documents; · Maintains AAG calendars on Outlook;
· Maintains telephone contact with other attorneys, parties, witnesses and client agencies;
· Reviews and distributes incoming mail, faxes and deliveries per AGO Critical Events policies and procedures.
Paralegal duties include, but are not limited to:
· Prepare pleadings including: Notices of intent to offer documents under ER 904(b); drug/alcohol, medical & mental health release of records paperwork; subpoenas/subpoenas duces tecum; witness & exhibit list for trial; and other pleadings as needed;
· Research various newspaper publications for the lowest cost for service by legal publication;
· Research various court rules for correct procedures and requirements to properly format legal documents;
· Assist AAG in preparation of trial notebooks;
· Attempt to locate addresses and phone numbers of parents and potential witnesses through internet phone book sites, and other Internet search engines;
· Schedule witnesses for trial;
· Occasionally call and interview witnesses regarding their knowledge of the case and need for testifying at trial; · Run criminal history checks, SCOMIS checks.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify at the Legal Secretary 2 level:
Option1:
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) or Legal Secretary Certificate from an accredited vocational institute.
AND
In addition to the above paragraph, one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Option 2:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and two years clerical typing, or stenographic experience and two years of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) may be substituted for the two years of clerical, typing or stenographic experience.
Option 3:
One year as a Legal Secretary 1.
To qualify at the Legal Secretary 1 level:
Option 1:
