Agency Profile
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office (AGO) provides excellent, independent, and ethical legal services to the State of Washington and protects the rights of its people. The chief legal office for the state of Washington, the AGO’s attorneys and staff in 27 divisions and 12 locations across the state provide legal services to roughly 200 state agencies, boards and commissions.
Led by Attorney General Bob Ferguson, the AGO works hard to protect consumers and seniors against fraud, keep our communities safe, protect our environment, and stand up for our veterans. The AGO is seeking a Policy Director to further these goals.
The Role
The Policy Director is responsible for the development and execution of the AGO’s policy program which seeks to advance and protect the legal rights and interests of Washingtonians, including veterans, consumers, workers, businesses, communities, and seniors. This position will report directly to the Chief of Staff and will lead a small team of policy analysts and interns. The position may reside in either Seattle or Olympia.
Compensation
Annual compensation is $75,000 to $95,000 depending on qualifications. Washington state employees are offered a solid benefit package that includes retirement, options for deferred compensation and a full array of health, dental and life insurance coverage.
DUTIES:
Primary duties include:
Policy Research and Development: Develop, lead, and execute the Attorney General’s Office’s public policy initiatives. This position is responsible for the execution of high quality research reports, white papers, and other key deliverables that advance the AGO’s policy priorities.
Multi-state Policy Issue Oversight: Manage the AGO’s involvement in multi-state public policy issues including making recommendations on state and federal policy issues and staffing the Attorney General on National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) policy committees.
Support Legislative Agenda: Collaborate with the Legislative Affairs Director to provide policy
support to advance Attorney General Request legislation with the Washington State legislature. Past legislation has included bills to protect veterans, enhance consumer protection, protect public safety, and improve government transparency.
Engage Stakeholder Groups: Work with state agencies, state and local governments, and stakeholder groups to advance the policy priorities of the AGO.
Internal Agency Engagement: Effectively engage the expertise of AGO attorneys and staff to ensure policy initiatives effectively complement the independent, legal mission of the office.
Lead Team: Lead a high-functioning team of policy analysts and interns.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications
Bachelors and/or advanced degree in public policy, law, government, economics, or related field Three or more years of relevant work experience
Demonstrate knowledge and experience in:
· Conducting research and performing quantitative and qualitative analysis
· Advancing policy initiatives, including the ability to bring together stakeholders and build consensus
· Supervision and performance management
· Knowledge, interest, and passion for public policy and its intersection with the law
Demonstrate ability to:
· Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Ability to cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders
· Respond to staff, client, media and public inquires quickly and effectively
· Prioritize and multi-task, balancing many competing tasks and timelines
· Organized and detail-oriented
· Self-directed and ability to take initiative to solve problems as they arise
